From Bavaria to the New World
The Journey of Andreas Gaar
The story of the Garr family in America begins with a crossing. In 1732, Andreas Gaar, born in 1685 in the small Bavarian village of Illenschwang, made the momentous decision to leave everything he knew and sail for the British colonies in North America. He was accompanied by his wife, Eve Seidelmann, and likely carried little more than the tools of his trade and the resolve to build something new.
In Bavaria, the Gaar name was associated with the trade of cartwrighting, the construction of carts and wagons, and the German word 'garre' (meaning cart) may be the very root of the family name. It was a practical, skilled trade, and Andreas brought that practical spirit with him across the Atlantic.
The Gaars settled in Orange County, Virginia, a region of rolling hills, dense forests, and rich farmland that was rapidly being opened by colonial settlers. Here, far from the cobblestone streets and church spires of Bavaria, Andreas and Eve began building the American branch of the family.
Over the following decades, the family grew and the name evolved. Some descendants kept the original 'Gaar' spelling, while others adopted 'Garr', a natural Anglicization that stuck. The family spread from Virginia into Kentucky, Indiana, Georgia, and eventually westward to the territories that would become Utah.
The full scope of this family tree was meticulously documented beginning in 1830 by Dr. John Wesley Garr, whose decades of research culminated in a comprehensive genealogy published in 1894. That work traced the family line all the way back to Andreas in Illenschwang, ensuring that the origins of the American Garr family would never be forgotten.
Andreas Gaar could not have imagined what his crossing would set in motion: generations of farmers, ranchers, pioneers, physicians, missionaries, and builders who would help shape communities from the Appalachian foothills to the shores of the Great Salt Lake. But it all began with one family, one voyage, and the courage to start over.
